One of Patchett’s Best Novels Ever
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
SUMMARY
Daphne Fuller, 53, and her husband, Jonathan, are spending the day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Soon after entering the museum, Jonathan notices an older man quietly following them. The man turns out to be Eddie Triplett, Daphne’s former stepfather from more than 44 years ago. Daphne has not seen Eddie since she was nine, when he disappeared from her family’s life after a series of unfortunate events. He had been married to Daphne's mother for only a short time, but the little time he and Daphne spent together was very significant to both of them. Their unexpected reunion and reconnection open the door to long-buried memories and secrets about the cause of their separation.
REVIEW
Whistler is a novel about how even a short relationship can shape an entire life. It’s a delightfully quiet, reflective novel. I listened to the audiobook and quickly realized I had to stop everything else I was doing because I could tell, within the first ten minutes, that author Ann Patchett would have something very important to say in this book. I wanted to give it my full attention. She did not disappoint.
The serenity and grace of this book blew me away. The story unfolded slowly and methodically. I couldn’t stop listening, yet I didn’t want it to end. I forced myself to take breaks so I could simply think about the intriguing story and each of the skillfully developed characters..
Dare I say, Whistler will ultimately be known as one of Patchett’s best novels. It’s a perfect blend of characters, setting, and story. And the audiobook is narrated by Patchett; it can’t get any better than that.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions expressed here are my own.
