SUMMARY
Jenna, owner of a successful private therapy practice, faces trust issues. She vows to stop snooping on her husband Colten’s phone, but sometimes she can’t resist. One night, she finds a disturbing message between him and his cousin, Bodie. A dancer at a bachelor party threatens Bodie with exposure if she doesn’t get what she wants. Her stage name, Lexus Chardonnay, rings a bell for Jenna—she heard it from a client. Kaitlyn is a medical student who dances for support, and she is Jenna's former patient. She stopped visiting Jenna three months ago. Reviewing past sessions, Jenna uncovers a complex truth that makes her question whom to trust as her career and family are at stake.
REVIEW
THIS IS A SAFE SPACE feels emotionally intense and a bit unsettling. The theme revolves around trust, fidelity, and family.
Why would a therapist spy on her husband’s phone when she’s already been caught doing it before, with devastating consequences? She’s obsessed. You don’t want her to get caught, but as she continues, you also want to understand what the messages between her husband and his cousin mean. By the way, his cousin is also her sister’s husband. Should she tell her very pregnant sister what is going on?
The author’s writing sparks your curiosity, and the tension keeps you turning pages. The characters are interesting but somewhat frustrating. For a therapist, Jenna has deep abandonment issues due to her parents' divorce. In contrast, Colten appears to be the most loving and forgiving husband ever.
I listened to the audiobook of THIS IS A SAFE SPACE, which was well narrated by a group of voice actors. Thanks to NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book. All opinions expressed here are my own.
