A Little Bit Hollywood and a Lot of Adrenaline

SUMMARY

The highly driven Detective Eve Ronin has become the subject of a hit television series, and it’s only complicated her life. The L.A. County Sheriff loves the publicity the series brings. He publicly pressures Eve to cooperate with the show and allows the actress who portrays Eve, Erin Casey, to shadow Eve on the job for a few days. After one of the ride-alongs, Erin is shot, and Eve realizes she may have been the real target.

At the same time, Eve is investigating the suspicious death of Juliette Winter, a former Hollywood child star. Eve also discovers she has a half-sister she never knew existed who might be involved in an illegal gambling scheme.  Should Eve get involved?

REVIEW

Split Screen is the seventh book in the Eve Ronin police-procedural series.  Even though I'd never read any books in this series, I still found it easy to follow. It is a fast-moving police procedural thriller with several investigations happening at the same time.  I don’t think Eve slept at all during the entire book!

Goldberg’s writing is extremely fast-paced.  Only read this if you want an adrenaline rush; there’s so much going on that I felt like I was drinking from a fire hose.  I guess that’s not surprising given Goldberg’s experience as a television writer and producer.  His dialogue and chapters are both quick and punchy.

Eve’s hard-charging character drives the narrative. Her supporting cast is full of colorful characters, including Eve’s partner Duncan “Donuts” Pavone, Waylon Giffon, the hat-obsessed L.A. County Sheriff, actress Erin Casey, and Eve’s estranged father and newly found half-sister. All are  unique and well-developed

I particularly liked the scenes between Eve and her partner, Duncan “Donuts,” who is currently on desk duty for a past transgression.  Their chemistry is unique, and their dialogue is especially sarcastic and funny.  One of my absolute favorite scenes was using the surround cameras of a new electric car to potentially solve a case.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for an advance copy of this book. All opinions expressed in the Split Screen | Book Review are my own.
