The Hidden One

The Kate Burkholder Series #14

Linda Castillo

A Perfect Blend of Characters, Plotting and Pacing

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

SUMMARY

The beloved Amish Bishop Ananias Stoltzfus disappeared without a trace over ten years ago. A local farmer recently discovered his remains in Kish Valley, Pennsylvania. The town elders asked the chief of police of Painters Mill, Ohio, Kate Burkholder, to investigate his death. The local police have arrested Amish cabinet maker and family man Jonas Bowman for the murder. The police had found Bowman’s gun with Stoltzfus’s decayed body.

Burkholder and Bowman had grown up together and had been close. Neither Burkholder nor the elders believe that Bowman could have committed this crime. But the evidence against Bowman continues to mount, and when Burkholder asks questions about the Bishop’s mysterious past, she is attacked and threatened. Burkholder’s attacker will stop at nothing to ensure Bowman is convicted of murdering the Bishop.

REVIEW

THE HIDDEN ONE is a perfect blend of characters, plotting, and pacing. My favorite part was Kate Burkholder’s character; she took my breath away. She is determined, resilient, and fearless. Finding books with an intelligent and strong woman character like this is sometimes difficult. Thank you, Linda Castillo, for bringing this stalwart character to life. Castillo’s writing is skilled and smart.

Castillo grabbed my attention from the beginning of the story with a mysterious note, “I know who you are. I know what you did. I know your secrets, all of them.” This suspenseful mystery will keep you guessing right up to the satisfying end.

How have I not heard of this Kate Burkholder series before now? I plan to remedy that situation very soon. I selected THE HIDDEN ONE merely hoping to get a better feeling for the Amish culture. I got that and more and can't wait to read the entire series.

I listened to the audiobook of THE HIDDEN ONE, performed by the captivating narrator Kathleen McInerney. McInerney easily differentiates characters and will have readers impressed with accents, tone, and pacing. She treats listeners to an assortment of personalities.

Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.
