The Unheard

By Nicci French

A Satisfying and Intriguing Read

⭐️⭐️⭐️

SUMMARY

When three-year-old Poppy returns from a weekend with her father, her mom, Tess senses something must have happened over the weekend. Tess's concerns increase when she finds a crayon drawing of a woman falling out of a tower. Tess is further convinced by Poppy’s language, action, and behavior over the next several days that she saw something or something happened to her over that weekend.

Jason, who had left Tess a year ago, is now married to another woman and his new wife is pregnant. Jason tells Tess that she is overreacting. He says the weekend went off with a hitch.

Tess insists something is wrong, and she is determined to find the truth. Her search will set off a storm of accusations, secrets, and crimes. Lives and livelihoods are at stake.

“Memory is a lie, a creative act, a flimsy shield against the truth.”

REVIEW

THE UNHEARD is a satisfactory and intriguing read. The writing is good, but the characters left me wanting.

Tess’s character drives the story, and her behavior is a little over the top on the scale of believability. I also did not feel any real connection to Poppy’s character other than her behavior following the weekend with her dad. She never really came to life on the page.

Nicci French is the writing duo and real-life couple Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. Recent novels written by this duo include House of Correction(2020) and The Lying Room (2019). Both also continue to write separately. The narrator for The Unheard audiobook was Olivia Vinall. Her performance was stellar. Her pacing, voice, and tone brought this gut-wrenching story to life
