SUMMARY

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday, and her husband Adam is throwing her the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding they never had. Everyone she loves will be there, except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But Livia is secretly glad Marnie won’t be there. She is very mad at her.

Livia has recently uncovered a secret about their daughter which, if revealed, will shake the foundation of their family to its core. She needs to tell Adam, but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam, meanwhile, has his own surprise for Livia: he’s arranged for Marnie to secretly fly back for the party. But before Marnie arrives, Adam hears some terrible news. Now he too is faced with a dilemma: Does he share what he's learned with his wife? Is hiding the truth for a little while the same as telling a lie? And how far are Adam and Livia willing to go to protect the ones they love—and give each other a last few hours of happiness?

REVIEW

THE DILEMMA is a thought-provoking and moving family drama. The story is busting with gut wrenching emotion. It’s a fast moving and a very quick read. The two main characters, Livia and Adam are skillfully constructed and their dialog sets the tone. The story alternates between Livia and Adam’s perspective and this alternating point of view really works fabulously for this book.

Author B. A. PARIS’s descriptive writing really bring out the angst of this poignant story. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the lies and secrets of THE DILEMMA. If you are looking for a great book club pick this thought-provoking story would lead to some great discussions. It an expertly delivered portrait of a family in crisis.

PARIS grew up in England but has spent most of her adult life in France. She has five daughters is the author of Bring Me Back (2018) The Breakdown (2017) and Behind Closed Doors (2016). Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
