SUMMARY
Andrea (Andy) Oliver thought she knew her mother well. Laura is a speech pathologist who has spent her entire life in Bell Isle, Georgia living a quiet life. At least that’s what Andrea thought. A trip to the mall for Andrea‘s 31st birthday lunch changed everything when gunfire explodes in the Rise-n-Dine cafe. Andrea sees a different side of her mother she had never seen before. Laura courageously confronts the gunman and is able to bring the shooting spree to an end.
Laura had been trying to bury her dangerous past, hoping no one would find her. But after the incident at the mall, she know it’s inevitable. Her face is all over the television news broadcasts. and now her past is rushing to catch up with her. Laura sends Andrea away, to keep her safe. But Andrea’s harrowing journey is anything but safe.

Loved it! Unbelievably, this is the first Karin Slaughter book I have read. Oh my goodness, it was so good! The story was fascinating and the characters were well-developed. Reading this is like the wildest roller coaster ride you can imagine. Your adrenaline is pulsing and keeps you turning pages.
Slaughter’s writing is smooth, smart and tension-filled. She has expertly woven the past with the present. You’ll be fascinated by both Andy’s road trip as she tries to figure out the pieces of her mother’s past, as well as Laura’s mysterious backstory from the 1980’s. My favorite part was Laura’s stand-off with the shooter at the Rise-n-Dine. I was so impressed by her calmness, and how she was willing to give up her life to protect her daughter. And we won’t even mention her skill with a knife. We should all be lucky enough to have mothers like that.
Looks like I’ll be reading a lot more Karin Slaughter in the near future. If you haven’t read this, do it, do it now! Slaughter is a NYT best selling author and has penned nineteen novels including Pretty Girls and The Good Daughter. She is a native of Georgia and lives in Atlanta. Three of her novels, Pieces of Her, The Good Daughter and Cop Town are in development for film or television. I listened to PIECES OF HER on Audible and found the narration fabulous, just like the rest of the book.
